Wonky Tooth

Scout has been noteworthy as well.  She has learned to read!!

I think six has been harder for her than other ages because she has had to mature A LOT.   This has made being her mom more interesting.  She has some fun things to say, questions to ask, and stories to tell.  She is so smart, spunky, and really knows who she is.  My favorite thing about her learning to read, is her love of music.  She is loving the hymnal, and counting time (yes, I said, counting time), and reading the words.  More than that though, her voice is soooooooo sweet and perfectly in tune.  That makes a musical momma proud!

Six Sets of Lungs

I was positive that I had nearly lost my mind when I volunteered to make 6 sets of lungs for my daughter's school play, featuring the human body.

The play is sure to be cute, with a gaggle of 5 year-olds parading around as singing skeletons, lungs, muscles, and craniums. I felt a bit guilty from last years play as an adult participant, having helped out a big ZERO. So this year, I jumped on the responsibility as a, slightly sewing machine savvy, kindergarten loving, adult.

After hours of work, tracing, cutting, sewing, drawing, filling, fastening, buying, and planning, I finished the dang lungs.

Then, last night we watched 30 Rock, a TV show (though we watched it on the computer) and what do you know, the opening gag was about the goofy main character acting like a kidney in an elementary school play. Though it must be a more common experience than I had imagined, the sketch did reinforce that I have indeed lost my mind. I really would do ANYTHING, no matter how goofy, for my kids. Making lungs out of felt, beans, elastic and a sharpie counts.

My fingers are still blue from the sharpie!

Scout-isms

At breakfast, I asked Scout what she wanted to be when she grew up. She had mentioned that she was going to let her children wear her belt with the rhinestones. I told her she would have to save the belt for 30 years if she was up for it. That got us on the topic of the future. She said she wanted to be a "driving-pick-up-mom". This seems to be the exact thing that I do, or how she perceives me (I do other things as well if you can believe it)!! She then told me she was going to live in the city and pointed in the direct direction of Grass Valley (she is my girl, with a keen sense of direction). I asked her if she meant Grass Valley, and she said yes, the city, cause she hates the woods. Grass Valley has 12,300 human occupants!! Scout said she hates the woods, because of the bears, which seems like a good point. I wonder if a raccoon can scare away a bear?

Scout's Excited!!

Our friends are traveling around the world and sending our kids cards from their destinations. Scout got a get well card in the mail from them, and I thought it was cute to watch her open it.

Here it is.

No training wheels = road rash

Scout is four and has just learned to ride her bike, without training wheels, while we were camping a month ago. She is quite good at it, for her age. I was able to catch her on video riding a few minutes after she figured it out.

She rode all week at the campground, and when we got home, she was just waiting for the opportunity to try on our lightly sloped, seldom used road in front of our house. While we were cooking dinner, she slipped out, without a shirt, or helmet, and took off on her bike. Only to find that the slight slope was not as forgiving as the very well maintained flat drive of the New Briton State Campground.

She bent three teeth back into her mouth, and had scrapes and bruises on her face, chest, back, arms, hands, and wrists. I am very thankful that the teeth popped back into her head without damage, that she did not bump her head at all, that the bleeding stopped, and mostly that I did not see it happen. Here is a picture of the aftermath.

She has healed very quickly, because I think little people are made of rubber. She will not loose her teeth, and she is back to being her beautiful, adventurous self.
